Getting started might seem a bit hard but, actually, with an open-minded approach and following these easy practical tips you will definitely start exploring tarot cards and tarot readings in a wonderful and successful way! Let’s see then what we need to know about tarot cards to get started!

History and Origins

The history of the tarot is lost in time, becoming itself – as well as what it tells about – mysterious and intriguing. The origin of these cards cannot be established with certainty: for some they appear with I Ching as early as the 10th century BC, for others in Mexico around 1300, in Europe in 1100 or in Egypt around 1300 .. Each culture claims in one way or another the gestation of this divinatory art that developed mainly in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, in the courts of northern Italy – to which the oldest tarot decks belong.

Numerous studies and researches developed between 1700 and 1800, mostly aimed at understanding the symbols underlying the two decks that make up the cards. The first – of the major Arcana (or even “triumphs”), consisting of 22 figures – refers to a Christian iconography, representing figures such as the Judgement, Strength, Justice .. and carries out the task of indicating which particular situations of life described by universal symbols; the second – consisting of 56 figures, the minor Arcana – consists of traditional playing cards, capable of defining responses by introducing particular characters to them. The most common and used tarot deck is the Rider Waite deck.

Some people may be skeptical about tarot cards, but it remains undeniable the almost magical character that – if not by faith – this art assumes due to its historical heritage, still handed down today in many cultures.

Tarot 101: Getting started with tarot readings

Getting started to full immerse into the magical world of tarot and tarot reading correctly, it is necessary to get adequate information about this practice. It is possible, in fact, to buy manuals in the library in the dedicated department but also to take advantage of the countless free or paid guides on the web. In this way, you will have a generic or in-depth introduction based on the selection of the guide or text chosen. Surely, however, practice is the best method with which to refine the technique, learn and deepen the countless interpretations.

Buying the right deck

The next step will be to buy a deck of cards suitable for tarot reading. You can find many different tarot decks available in unique styles and in all prices. The choice and consequently the purchase of a deck of cards is also a very important. You need to find a tarot deck that resonated with you and your own taste and knowledge and, especially at first, it’s better to rely on a traditional very easy to understand tarot deck as some of the trending tarot decks are a bit too harsh to read.

Set your goals and focus

After having documented yourself sufficiently and having purchased a tarot deck, it is necessary to identify and fine-tune your goal and what you want to achieve by reading the cards. To start making contact with the deck it is necessary to know each card and therefore each figure represented. It is important to know that the seventy-eight cards can be divided into two groups: the major arcana and the minor arcana. The group of the major arcana consists of twenty-two cards which symbolize life. The group of minor arcana, on the other hand, consists of fifty-six cards which symbolize events, people and feelings that can be experienced during the span of life. This first division can help you learn a little bit of what cards want you to know and what direction you need to take to make something you want in your life truly happen. To set your goals and let tarot cards give you the proper answers to your questions try to connect with your intuition and with the deck focusing and committing with the help of meditation. Meditate on the questions while shuffling the cards and let your intuition ask the right question. Don’t be scared of asking for what you truly want to know. Unveil your true desires and listen to what tarot cards have to tell you.

Asking the right questions

When consulting the Tarot, the question must be formulated with great care. The first thing to remember is that the Tarot does not make prophecies about the future; therefore, one should not ask “Will I find a job?” but rather “What can I do to make my job search successful?”. In fact, even assuming that the Tarot is able to predict the future, a straight answer question like “Will my project be successful?” tends to deny the possibilities of action of the consultant: the latter, on the other hand, must remove from himself the idea of being in the hands of an unavoidable destiny, in order to become the active subject, the engine of his own existence. In addition, we must learn to formulate questions in a positive way, that is, placing the emphasis on possible solutions to problems, rather than on the latter: instead of asking “Why don’t my relationships last?” it is preferable to ask “What can I do to make my relationships last long?”.

The first interpretations

Once we have connected the Tarot and learned the meaning of the individual cards, we can proceed by trying to verify if our interpretations actually correspond to reality. A good way to start is to first use a single card to answer a question about our day. In the morning, we draw a single card and interpret it, then write our interpretation. In the evening, we reconsider the progress of our day, and check that the interpretation of the card has been correct. Continuing in this way for several weeks, we will be able to start interpreting more than one card at a time, and as we proceed we will add the Minor Arcana to the Major Arcana, so as to have an increasingly clear insight of what the future holds. In this way we will continue to learn, but not only: it will be our own interpretations to make us understand when we have interpreted well and when we were wrong, allowing us to refine our technique more and more. When you master the art of interpreting one single card you can proceed with 3 cards spread, four cards spread and so on.

Don’t “force the cards”

One of the most classic mistakes of beginners is that of the tendency to “force the cards”, repeating the same question several times to get the desired result. It must always be remembered that the cards allow us to interpret events but do not condition them; repeating the same question several times means not channeling the magical energies that are transferred to the cards, but rather channeling our energy, anger, which will lead to answers different from those that show reality, and consequently to interpretations that will surely be wrong. Let’s limit ourselves, in the first few times, to observe and try to understand what the cards want to tell us. And if everything is still too complicated, let’s continue to study and interpret: only commitment and the right approach to Tarot will allow us to use them at their best!
